MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) – The Tamilnadu Foodgrains Merchants Association has appealed to Union minister for commerce and industry Piyush Goyal and to the directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) to keep a check on the price and availability of Urad, Tur and Moong.

From time to time, the Centre allows mill owners to import these items to ensure that the demand is met and prices don’t spiral.

Association president S P Jayapragasam said through a trade notice dated March 19, 2020, the Centre allowed import of these dals till March 31, 2021. However, it was revised by the government in another order that it should be made before August 31, 2020.

At present, imports have been made to the tune of 90,000 tonne only against the allowed quantity of four lakh tonne.

Low cultivation in India and less import has resulted in price of urad dal climbing. The association pointed out that the government’s minimum support price for urad is 6,000 per quintal. So, farmers will not be affected by permitting import of the same.

The association said that public will be benefited by getting urad at a lesser price, especially during the festive season. They urged the government to consider these factors and extend date of imports of the permitted four lakh tonne of urad till March 31.
