Mumbai (Commodities Control) - Red chilli prices continue to sizzle their way forward head long with rising supplies in the major producing mandis. Traders attribute it to robust overseas demand, due to which chillies in Guntur shot up Rs 2-6 per Kg. Prices were generally steady in Warangal mandi of Telangana on Tuesday, amid reduced arrivals today.

Guntur registered increased arrivals of 95,000 bags vs 85,000 bags of red chillies, as 334 chilli variety shot up Rs 6 to be quoted at Rs 105-138 per kg, while DD variety upped Rs 5 per Kg at Rs 150-170 per kg. This variety has upped Rs 10 per Kg in the last two trading sessions. Export-quality Teja and 273 red chillies garnered Rs 2 per kg, while other varieties were priced unchanged.

Barring red chilli variety 334 that gave up Rs 9 per Kg, all the other chilli varieties were quoted steady. Warangal registered arrivals of nearly 8,000 bags vs 10,000 bags on 28th September. Prices were supported on the lower end due to lesser supplies in the markets.

According to the market participants, the majority of growers have sold their stocks to the merchants and middlemen when the prices nosedived during lockdown. Prices have started shooting up furiously, since last week.

Since the harvest season is months away, the sudden spurt in prices is attributed to the gradual opening up of the supply chain sector after a prolonged lockdown shut markets for months.

According to market participants, there has been pent-up demand in the markets. Export channels too are opening up after being shut down for months.
