Mustard Seed Stock Reduces To 8.5 Lakh MT, Direct Supply Of 2 lakh MT In Lockdown

NEW DELHI (Commodities control) Mustard seed arrival in November 2020 reduced to one third of peak arrival in last April during current crop season. The arrival was recorded at 2.60 lakh MT in November, while 9.8 lakh MT mustard seed arrived in mandis of producing states of the country in April 2020. Lower arrival pushed prices at new highs in spot as well as future market. As per latest report, 62.65 lakh MT mustard seed arrived till November end and balance stocks reduced to mere 8.5 lakh MT for consumption till February 2020.

As per report compiled by Jaipur based Marudhar Trading Agency, total crop was estimated at 69 lakh MT and total availability at 72 lakh MT including of opening stock of 5 lakh MT. But the farmers sold 2 lakh MT mustard seed directly to millers during lockdown period, so only 72 lakh MT seed was available at the opening of current season. First time, the report estimated direct supply to millers. Earlier, It estimated total marketable availability at 74 lakh MT.

Mustard seed arrival has been reducing in various producing states. The arrival reduced to mere 35,000 MT in November from 1.40 lakh MT arrival in March in Uttar Pradesh. Rajasthan’s monthly arrival also reduced from 3.25 lakh MT from March to mere 1.4 lakh MT in November. Same trend was noticed in all the producing states. Therefore total arrival reduced to 2.60 lakh MT in November. Daily arrival also reduced to 80,000 quintal from 150,000-200,000 lakh quintal.

Millers’ monthly crushing also reduced to 5 lakh MT in November. Monthly crushing of mustard seed was 6 lakh MT in October, 6.5 lakh MT in September, 8 lakh MT in each month of August, July, June and May. Millers had crushed 7.5 lakh MT seed in March and 6.5 lakh MT in April. Total 63.5 lakh MT mustard seed has been crushed till November. Hence, the millers and stockists have available stock of 2.9 lakh MT in hand. NAFED & HAFED have stock of 1.5 lakh MT and 0.30 lakh MT respectively.

The farmers had total stock of around 66.45 lakh MT as one 1 march, 2020. Now it is reduced to 3.80 lakh MT of oil seed. Processors, stockists and NAFED & HAFED holds stock of 4.70 lakh MT at the end of November. Therefore total stock is reduced to 8.5 lakh MT for the rest of the current season.
