NEW DELHI, Oct 25 (Commoditiescontrol) - Sugar prices remained stable on the first day of the week in wholesale markets across the country. With the demand for Diwali not showing up anywhere, it is believed that the festive demand will not get much support. Now till Diwali there will be scattered demand. The mills also did not increase the factory rate today due to lack of demand support. However, Balrampur Group, a major company in eastern UP and Bihar, and a few other companies raised mill rates by up to Rs 20-25 as an exception.

After a sharp increase in the mill rate and market price in UP last week, the markets remained stable today. Traders said that the festive demand for sugar would remain till October 25-26. Today, even on the first day of the week, due to lack of strength in demand, the mill rate and market price could not get support. Traders said that the wholesale prices of sugar have increased sharply, so there is no scope for further increase. Now only scattered demand will be visible in the wholesale markets.

Markets in South and West India also remained stable as demand stayed tepid. Nikhil Agarwal of Hyderabad said that sugar may remain stable this week due to festive demand. There is no possibility of increase in the price as with the start of sugarcane crushing, the supply of new sweetener will start soon. Sugar was also sold at the previous price in Mumbai's Vashi market today.
