Paddy Firms up amid Lower Arrivals, Rice Mills' Demand; Basmati Rice Joins in

NEW DELHI, Oct 26 (Commoditiescontrol) - Paddy prices moved higher by Rs 25 to 75 per quintal in the mandis of north India on Tuesday as the arrival was seen weak due to rain and hailstorm two days ago and amid sustained demand from the rice mills. Though export demand is subdued in Basmati rice, the prices rose by Rs 100-200 per quintal on the back of improvement in local demand in the wake of festival, coupled with rise in paddy prices.

In Delhi's Naya Bazar on Tuesday, the prices of Pusa 1,509 variety of steam rice rose by Rs 200 to Rs 6,000-6,400 and its Sela rice by Rs 200 to Rs 5,500-5,800 per quintal. Similarly, the price of steam rice of Pusa 1,121 variety climbed Rs 200 to Rs 6,900 -Rs 7,400 and its Sela rice also moved higher to Rs 6,000 -Rs. 6,200 per quintal. Pusa 1,401 variety steam rice prices rose by Rs 100 to Rs 6,200-Rs 6,400 per quintal. While, the prices of Sugandha's steam rice remained stable at Rs 5,000 to Rs 5,300 per quintal.

In Haryana's Kaithal mandi, the price of Pusa 1,718 variety of paddy increased to Rs 3,100 to Rs 3,300, and that of DP variety to Rs 2,980 per quintal. In the state's Gohana mandi, the price of 1,509 variety of paddy was at Rs 2,800 to Rs 3,131, 1,718 variety at Rs 3,000 to 3,300 and Pusa 1,121 variety at Rs 3,200 to Rs 3,600 per quintal. According to traders, the daily arrival of paddy was less in the mandis, while prices moved up amid demand from the mills.

In Punjab's Nabha mandi, the price of Pusa 1,121 variety of paddy was Rs 3,200, Pusa 1,509 variety at Rs 2,700 to 3,090 and DP 1,401 variety at Rs 3,080 to Rs 3,130 per quintal. In Amritsar mandi, 1,509 variety of paddy quoted at Rs 2,900, 1,718 variety at Rs 3,275 to 3,399 and Pusa 1,121 at Rs 3,360 to 3,499 per quintal. According to traders, the moisture content in paddy has increased due to the recent rains.
