MUMBAI, 30 May (Commoditiescontrol): The southwest monsoon arrived on India's mainland on Thursday, a day ahead of the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast. The monsoon had initially progressed into the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 19.
“Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala and advanced into most parts of northeast India today, on May 30, 2024,” the IMD announced in a statement.
Both Kerala and the northeastern region have experienced heavy to very heavy rainfall over the past few days, signaling a robust start to the monsoon season.
The early arrival and intense rainfall are expected to have several significant impacts. For agriculture, the timely onset of the monsoon is beneficial, ensuring adequate water supply for sowing crops such as rice, sugarcane, and cotton. This could potentially lead to higher yields and a prosperous season for farmers.
However, the heavy rains may also pose challenges, including the risk of flooding in low-lying areas and disruptions in transportation and daily life. Authorities are on alert to manage these potential issues and mitigate any adverse effects on communities.
Overall, the early and strong monsoon is a mixed blessing, promising agricultural benefits while necessitating vigilance against possible adverse conditions.
