MUMBAI, 5 Aug (Commoditiescontrol): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted extremely heavy rainfall in parts of west Rajasthan today, with very heavy rainfall expected in east Rajasthan today, Thursday, and Friday. Himachal Pradesh is forecasted to receive very heavy rainfall on Wednesday, while Uttarakhand will experience similar conditions from Tuesday to Friday.

According to the IMD, there is a moderate flash flood risk over several watersheds and neighborhoods in west Rajasthan, south Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand over the next 24 hours. Surface inundation may occur in areas with fully saturated soils and low-lying regions due to the anticipated rainfall.

The weather agency has cautioned that such heavy rainfall could damage horticulture and standing crops due to waterlogging. Additionally, very heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Gujarat and central Maharashtra today. Over the next five days, west Madhya Pradesh will also see heavy rainfall, with east Madhya Pradesh affected on Wednesday and Thursday, and Chhattisgarh until Wednesday. Konkan and Goa are expected to receive heavy rain until Saturday, while central Maharashtra and Gujarat will see heavy showers until Friday. Saurashtra and Kutch are forecasted to receive very heavy rain today.

In light of these heavy rains, the IMD has advised farmers to drain excess water from fields growing rice, soybean, maize, cotton, sugarcane, pigeon pea, black gram, green gram, vegetables, and orchards in Madhya Pradesh. Similar measures are recommended for crops in south Gujarat, including rice, sugarcane, cowpea, cluster bean, and vegetables. In Rajasthan, farmers should protect pearl millet, groundnut, cotton, cluster bean, green gram, black gram, sesame, soybean, moth bean, and orchards. The IMD also recommends providing mechanical support to horticultural crops and staking vegetables.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura until Saturday. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim will experience heavy rainfall until Tuesday, and Odisha on Wednesday. Bihar and Odisha will have heavy rainfall until Thursday, while Jharkhand will be affected on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Gangetic West Bengal on Tuesday.

The IMD suggests taking measures to drain excess water from crop fields to prevent water stagnation in the North Eastern states, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and coastal Karnataka. The monsoon trough remains active and south of its normal position at mean sea level, with the offshore trough running along the coast from south Gujarat to northern Kerala.
