New Delhi, August 8 (Commoditiescontrol): Small cardamom prices remained flat to weak during today's auctions in Kerala's major markets. While prices held steady in one center, they experienced a slight decline in another, despite strong buying activity that initially drove prices up amid increased arrivals.
The average price per kilogram ranged from Rs 2,251 to Rs 2,256, down slightly from Rs 2,252 to Rs 2,275 in the previous session. However, the highest price per kilogram saw a significant increase, rising from Rs 2,600 to Rs 3,063. Over the past 18-20 sessions, prices have remained constant to weak, fluctuating between Rs 2,150 and Rs 2,300 per kg due to limited demand.
Arrivals increased to 77,718 kg from 73,317 kg, driven by higher arrivals at the Nedumkandum auction center. Despite the rise in arrivals, demand remained strong, with offtake increasing to 73,173 kg from 69,176 kg. However, the offtake rate slightly declined to 94.2%, down from 94.3% in the previous session. Dealers accounted for approximately 22% of total arrivals.
Grade-specific rates have remained stable over the last five sessions. Prices per kilogram for different grades are as follows:
- 7 mm grades: Rs 2,080 to Rs 2,160
- 7-8 mm grades: Rs 2,280 to Rs 2,360
- 8 mm and above grades: Rs 2,480 to Rs 2,660
In the North East, large cardamom prices saw a slight decline following a sharp increase in the previous auction, though demand remains strong. Prices for Badadana and Chotadana dropped by Rs 40 to Rs 60 per kilogram. Badadana prices were reported between Rs 1,300 and Rs 1,599 per kg, while Chotadana prices ranged from Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,361 per kg.
Looking ahead, small cardamom prices are expected to remain rangebound with a slight negative trend, largely due to subdued demand. Additionally, the upcoming harvesting season, set to begin next month, is likely to keep prices stable.
