Mumbai, 01 Oct 2024 (Commoditiescontrol): Masur (lentil) prices remained largely stable for the third consecutive session on Tuesday, with restricted trading activity characterizing the market ahead of the end of Pitru Paksha. Prices for Desi Masur saw minimal movement, while Canadian-origin Masur remained unchanged across major ports, except in Mumbai, where a marginal price drop was recorded. Desi masur in key markets such as Kareli and Lalitpur reported slight gains, but overall, no significant price changes were observed across the board.

Major trading hubs, including Delhi and Indore, also showed stability in Desi Masur prices amd matching demand and supply.

In mandi trades, Desi Masur prices held steady across key regions. In Lalitpur and Jabalpur, prices ranged from ₹5,500 to ₹5,850 per quintal, while in Kareli, they varied between ₹5,000 and ₹5,905 per quintal.

In the All Expenses Paid (Bilty) category, prices also remained stable. In Delhi, the Madhya Pradesh Line Masur was quoted at ₹6,575 per quintal, while Indore held firm at ₹6,000 per quintal. Bareilly (Moti) traded between ₹6,625 and ₹6,650 per quintal, with Kanpur prices unchanged at ₹6,500 per quintal.

Imported Masur prices exhibited minimal movement. In Mumbai, Canada-origin Masur eased by ₹50, trading at ₹5,900 per quintal at Mundra and ₹5,950 per quintal at Hajira ports. In Delhi, Canadian lentils remained steady at ₹6,175 per quintal, with Canada Crimson and Australia Nugget varieties holding firm at ₹6,100 per quintal.

In the Split Lentil (Masoor Dal) segment, prices remained stable. In Mumbai, Masoor Dal traded between ₹7,200 and ₹7,400 per quintal, while Katni saw prices range from ₹7,050 to ₹7,500 per quintal.

Meanwhile, the Nipper variety of red lentils, intended for October/November shipment, is currently being offered at $730 per metric ton on a Cost and Freight (CNF) basis at Kolkata port. This cargo is available under the seller's option for break bulk or container shipment on a high-seas basis. In addition, forward contracts for Crimson red lentils, set for November/December shipment, are being offered at $680 CNF Mundra port, also under the seller's option for break bulk or container shipment on a high-seas basis. Both shipments are available, with the final weight to be confirmed at the discharge port.

Globally, lentil markets have continued an upward trend throughout September, with both red and green lentils posting week-over-week gains. Despite an increase in new crop deliveries from North American growers, the percentage of supplies sold remains lower than last year. This reduced participation by growers is likely due to current prices being significantly lower than the peaks of the 2023-24 season. Additionally, reports of substantial crop damage in Australia are providing further support to international markets.

Looking ahead, Masur prices are expected to remain stable, supported by reduced Australian crop yields and limited selling from North American growers. However, a major uptrend in domestic Masur prices seems unlikely, given the ample supply of matar (peas) and declining Tur prices, which are keeping the market relatively balanced.
