Chana Prices Weaken Amid Pitru Paksha, Festive Demand Set to Revive Market

Mumbai, 01 Oct 2024 (Commoditiescontrol):Chana (chickpea) prices experienced a downward trend on Tuesday, weighed down by muted demand as the Pitru Paksha period drew to a close. However, the decline in prices was limited due to lower arrivals and reduced stockist selling at prevailing rates. Millers, anticipating a price rise ahead of the upcoming Navratri festival, have scaled back their sales of chana dal and besan. The overall market remained sluggish, but sentiment is expected to improve with the conclusion of Pitru Paksha on Wednesday and the onset of festive demand.

On the international front, Tanzania-origin chana was quoted at $830 per metric ton (MT) on a CNF Navasheva basis, while Australia-origin chana was priced higher at $880/MT. Domestically, Australian-origin chana held steady at ₹7,450 per quintal, whereas Tanzanian chana saw a minor dip, quoted at ₹7,000 per quintal, down by ₹50.

In the All Expenses Paid (Bilty) segment, several key markets reported price declines. In Delhi, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh-origin chana dropped by ₹75, with prices now ranging from ₹7,775 to ₹7,800 and ₹7,725 to ₹7,750 per quintal, respectively. Indore’s Katewala variety remained stable, trading at ₹7,500-7,750 per quintal. Jaipur’s Desi variety fell by ₹50, now priced between ₹7,875-7,925 per quintal. Notably, Nagpur experienced a significant drop of ₹150, while Kanpur's chana market remained steady, with prices for Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh-origin chana at ₹7,750 per quintal.

In the mandi segment, prices held largely stable across regions, though markets in Amravati, Kota, Sagar, and Kareli witnessed minor declines.

With the Pitru Paksha period ending on October 2, and the Navratri festival beginning on October 3, market demand is expected to pick up, providing support to chana prices. Additionally, the start of Rabi sowing in October is likely to boost demand for chana seeds, further firming up prices. However, any significant price rise may be tempered as demand could ease by mid-October, when the festive mood begins to dominate market activity.
