Mumbai, October 03 (CommoditiesControl): Small cardamom prices experienced a mixed trend today following a significant surge in arrivals, exceeding 1.5 lakh kg across markets. Notably, the Vandanmettu centers reported arrivals surpassing 1.0 lakh kg. Despite strong demand, the influx of supply led to a slight decrease in prices.
Auction data revealed that average prices per kilogram ranged from Rs 2,232 to Rs 2,300, down from Rs 2,277 to Rs 2,285 in the previous session. However, the highest price recorded increased to Rs 3,035, up from Rs 2,828 earlier.
Today's total arrivals reached 153,977 kg—the second highest for the season—marking a rise from 104,394 kg in the last session, attributed to auctions being conducted at two locations instead of one. The offtake also saw an uptick, totaling 143,429 kg compared to 100,331 kg previously, leading to an overall offtake rate of 93.1%, down from 96.1% last season.
Grade-specific prices remained stable for the fifth consecutive session. Current rates per kilogram include:
- 7 mm grades: Rs 2,200 to Rs 2,280
- 7-8 mm grades: Rs 2,420 to Rs 2,550
- 8 mm or higher grades: Rs 2,680 to Rs 2,820
On the crop front, lower yields are anticipated in India, driven by adverse weather conditions such as heavy rains and floods affecting critical crop stages. Similarly, Guatemala's production is expected to be significantly reduced due to drought and extreme heat. This situation is likely to increase reliance on Indian exports to stabilize prices in the coming months.
While increased arrivals are expected to maintain relative price stability, the smaller crop in Guatemala and rising export demand may contribute to upward price pressures as the harvest progresses.
In the North East, large cardamom prices have seen a slight increase, with overall price rises of Rs 50-75. Current rates for Badadana range between Rs 1,350 and Rs 1,700 per kg, while Chotadana prices fall between Rs 1,250 and Rs 1,400 per kg.
