Mumbai, 07 Nov (Commoditiescontrol): Chana (chickpea) prices softened slightly across India on Thursday as steady arrivals and subdued demand following Diwali celebrations weighed on the market. Demand for chana-based products such as besan and chana dal has moderated, though traders expect a demand uptick with the approaching wedding season.

In Delhi, benchmark prices declined by ₹25 per quintal for both Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh-origin chana, settling between ₹7,175 and ₹7,300 per quintal. Other key markets, including Jaipur, Nagpur, Raipur, Bikaner, and Kanpur, remained stable, indicating overall market steadiness.

Globally, chana prices held steady with Tanzanian-origin chana at $820 per metric ton and Australian-origin at $810. In India, Tanzanian chana eased by ₹100 to ₹6,550-₹6,600 per quintal, while Australian-origin chana maintained a firm position at ₹7,200 per quintal.

Regionally, Indore's Kantewala variety traded within the ₹7,050-₹7,200 range, while Jaipur’s desi chana quoted at ₹7,250-₹7,325 per quintal. Prices in Kanpur stabilized at ₹7,250, while Akola saw a ₹50 increase, reflecting regional variances in demand.

Earlier in the week, Nafed conducted auctions in Maharashtra, where chana traded between ₹6,678 and ₹6,701 per quintal, supporting market availability at affordable rates.

In Karnataka, unseasonal rains have delayed chana sowing in regions including Kalaburagi, Gadag, and Bagalkot, pushing some planting into late November. Sowing in Kalaburagi is delayed by a month, and in Gadag by about 15 days, potentially impacting yields if wet conditions persist.

Market experts anticipate chana prices to stay steady to firm, bolstered by the expected increase in demand from the wedding season and potential supply constraints due to Karnataka's delayed
