Mumbai, 13 Nov (Commoditiescontrol): Chana (chickpea) prices held largely steady on Wednesday, showing fluctuations only in select markets as buying picked up at lower levels.
In Delhi, chana from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh traded steadily between ₹7,000 and ₹7,125 per quintal. Major markets like Indore, Latur, Raipur, Bikaner, and Kanpur saw stable prices, while Akola and Solapur experienced a dip due to weaker demand. Desi chana prices advanced in Jaipur and Nagpur.
On the international front, chickpea prices remained stable with Tanzanian-origin chana unchanged at $725 per metric ton and Australian-origin chana steady at $710 per metric ton. In India, Tanzanian and Australian chickpeas were offered at ₹6,450-₹6,500 and ₹7,100 per quintal, respectively. Regionally, Indore’s Kantewala chana traded at ₹6,800-₹7,000 per quintal, while Jaipur’s desi chana rose by ₹25 to reach ₹7,075-₹7,125 per quintal. Kanpur held steady at ₹7,025-₹7,050 per quintal, while Akola saw a decline of ₹50 per quintal.
Recent chana auctions by Nafed in Maharashtra provided supplies at affordable rates, priced between ₹6,678 and ₹6,701 per quintal, supporting market stability.
Meanwhile, unseasonal rains in Karnataka have delayed chana sowing in key regions like Kalaburagi, Gadag, and Bagalkot, with sowing in Kalaburagi trailing by almost a month. Prolonged rainfall could affect yields, raising concerns over future supply constraints.
Analysts project a stable-to-firm trend for chana prices in the coming weeks, supported by strong wedding season demand and potential supply constraints from delayed sowing in Karnataka. Market activity has slowed due to assembly elections in some states but is expected to pick up post-elections, which could further support prices.
