Mumbai, 20 Jan (Commoditiescontrol): Chana (chickpea) prices experienced mixed trends across domestic markets on Monday. While the seasonal demand, driven by events like Kumbh Mela and the wedding season, provided some support, the market remained under pressure due to a surge in Australian imports.
Major markets, including Delhi and Indore, displayed varying price movements, influenced by easing selling pressure. Domestic arrivals saw a sharp decline of 37.5% to 1,911 metric tons, yet this drop in supply was overshadowed by significant imports. Over 80,000 metric tons of Australian-origin desi chickpeas arrived on January 9, 2025, with 18,726 metric tons unloaded at Kakinada Port by M.V. Nava Dionyssos and 61,089 metric tons at Kandla Port by M.V. Melody. Another shipment of 25,788 metric tons is expected at Mundra Port on January 20 aboard M.V. Darya Sindhu.
In Mumbai, Australian-origin chana prices held steady at ₹6,000 per quintal, while Tanzania-origin chana traded at ₹5,900 per quintal. In Delhi, bilty prices for Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh-origin chana dropped by ₹150 per quintal each, settling at ₹6,300–₹6,325 and ₹6,200–₹6,225 per quintal, respectively, reflecting weak buying interest.
Regional markets also showed mixed trends. Indore and Latur (Vijay/Annagiri variety) recorded no price changes, while markets in Akola, Nagpur, Solapur, Raipur, Bikaner, and Kanpur saw declines of ₹50–₹300 per quintal. Jaipur stood out with a marginal gain of ₹25. Meanwhile, in Rajasthan’s Kishangarh market, desi chana prices edged higher, whereas Madhya Pradesh markets such as Ashoknagar, Ganjbasoda, Dewas, and Sagar reported declines.
Looking ahead, chana prices are likely to remain subdued as Australian imports continue to flood the market and the domestic harvest next month increases supplies further. While seasonal demand from Ramadan and the Kumbh Mela may provide limited support, traders are expected to remain cautious, keeping a close watch on the evolving supply-demand dynamics.
