Mumbai, 20 Jan (Commoditiescontrol): Moong prices fluctuated across major domestic markets on Monday, with the summer-season variety experiencing a decline, while the fair average quality weakened further due to quality issues. Increased arrivals, up 4.6% to 536 metric tons according to Commoditiescontrol data, added pressure to an already uncertain market.

Karnataka remained the focus of market activity, with contrasting trends across its key trading centers. Prices strengthened at Gadag and Yadgir due to declining arrivals, with Gadag reporting a rise of ₹579 per quintal, trading between ₹7,000 and ₹8,701, and Yadgir seeing a gain of ₹499 per quintal. In contrast, Bidar witnessed a sharp drop of ₹400 per quintal as selling pressure increased. Madhya Pradesh’s Indore market also reported a ₹100 decline amidst quiet trading activity.

In Rajasthan, moong prices in Jaipur and Kishangarh fell by ₹100 and ₹250 per quintal, respectively. Other regional markets reported steady prices or remained unquoted due to limited demand and availability.

The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) has been actively procuring moong under the Kharif 2024 Price Support Scheme (PSS). As of now, NAFED has procured 1,58,145 metric tons, achieving nearly 50% of its target. Rajasthan has led the effort with 1,30,577 metric tons, followed by Karnataka at 26,752 metric tons. The minimum support price (MSP) for moong has been set at ₹8,682 per quintal.

Procurement deadlines vary by state, with Rajasthan’s drive concluding on January 15, while Tamil Nadu has extended its deadline to February 9. Meanwhile, NAFED has started releasing its moong stocks in states like Haryana, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat.

Key moong dal markets saw mixed trends as well. Gulbarga and Mumbai reported gains of ₹100 per quintal, whereas Jaipur experienced a decline of ₹100 per quintal.

Looking ahead, moong prices are likely to stabilize as arrivals slow down and seasonal demand increases during events like the Kumbh Mela and the ongoing wedding season. Continued government procurement activities are expected to further support market sentiment in the coming weeks.
