Chana Prices Show Mixed Trends Amid Selective Buying and Weak Mill Demand

Mumbai, 10 Sep 2024 (Commoditiescontrol): "Chana (chickpea) prices displayed mixed trends across key markets on Tuesday. Price rose in major consumption and trading centers in bilty trade due to selective buying by the mills. Meanwhile, prices fell in mandi trades in major production centers, triggered by a decrease in mill purchases. This downturn was primarily driven by active reselling of Chana dal and besan at reduced rates, which subsequently diminished mill off-take, lowering their demand for Chana. Additionally, retail demand is anticipated to decelerate approaching Pitra Paksha.

In Delhi’s "all expenses paid" or bilty trade, chana prices from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh increased by ₹75 and ₹50 per quintal, respectively. In Indore, Katewala chana prices held steady, while Jaipur saw a ₹75 per quintal rise. In contrast, desi chana prices in Maharashtra and parts of southern India showed a steady-to-weak trend, particularly in the local Desi and Annagiri varieties, which felt the impact of weaker demand. Kanpur also recorded a price drop of ₹50 per quintal.

In mandi trade, chana prices fell in Maharashtra and Rajasthan, while a steady-to-firm trend was observed in other states. The international market remained stable, with prices for Tanzanian and Australian-origin chana unchanged, and similar trends were seen in Mumbai.

On the international front, chana prices remained stable, with Tanzanian-origin chana quoted at $890 per metric ton and Australian-origin chana at $900 per metric ton in Mumbai. In rupee terms, Tanzanian chana was steady at ₹7,100 per quintal, while Australian-origin chana stood at ₹7,550 per quintal.

Looking ahead, Chana prices are poised to trade sideways in the near term, reflecting a seasonal slowdown in trading activity during Pitru Paksha. Nonetheless, the market's underlying strength is evident. Following a period of consolidation at current levels, we anticipate a resurgence in Chana prices during Navaratri, spurred by increased demand from retailers replenishing their stocks for Diwali.
