JHANSI (Commoditiescontrol) - The government has issued licences to the pulses mills/refiners to import 2.5 lakh tonnes of additional urad, making total imports in the current financial year to 4 lakh tonnes, out of which 1.5 lakh tonnes have already been imported by October.
However, in the investigation of Commoditiescontrol.com, it has been revealed that after March, the government may have to issue more quota of Urad. Because there is a huge shortage of Urad in the country this year.
Significantly, in the country's most urad producing area, Bundelkhand, matured crop has been badly hit by the rains. On one hand, due to crop failure, the production of kharif urad in the entire country has been reduced to almost half, while the quality of production has also been said to be very poor.
Aman, a trader in Jhansi, said, "Urad is the most consumed pulse in South India, but this time there is no sale of urad in Bundelkhand". The reason for this, he said, is that in south there is only a market of fine quality urad (fine quality), whereas this time there is not even 10% of such urad in Bundelkhand.
In such a situation, where is Urad of Bundelkhand being sold? In response to this question, the traders of the area claim that most of the supply is being done in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan this time.
Domestic Urad is being consumed after some cleanliness due to lower prices in tribal areas in Chhattisgarh. At the same time, papad and namkeen units are also giving importance to urad of Bundelkhand due to lower prices.
But from where is the traditional market of Urad being supplied in South India? In response to this question, Aman says, "This time the market in the south has become completely based on imports".
According to trade estimates, the country consumes about 24-25 lakh tonnes of urad annually. Out of which the average production of kharif is around 14-16 lakh tonnes. Also, about 4 lakh tonnes of urad is produced in the rabi season. The rest is supplied by import.
But this time the production of kharif urad in the country is expected to fall to about 7-8 lakh tonnes. Rabi Urad crop is also expected to be around 4 lakh tonnes. Also, the government has so far issued a quota of 4 lakh tonnes of urad imports. Up to 3 million tonnes of old stocks are also being available in the market. In this way, availability of Urad is just 18-19 lakh tonnes against the consumption of 2.4 million tonnes. Hence, supply may weaken further than demand.
