Kochi, 2 July (Commoditiescontrol) The Union government may announce a special economic package for the natural rubber sector which is reeling under pressure due to Covid related issues, said Dr Sawar Dhanania, the newly appointed chairman of the Rubber Board. The package will benefit not only the one million plus growers but traders and stockists also. The basic idea of the package will be to realize better price for the growers and good quality natural rubber for rubber based industries, he said.
Latest technology will be adopted in rubber production and marketing. Cultivation of Genetically modified rubber (GM Rubber) is major breakthrough in the production of natural rubber.
GM rubber has been developed by Kerala based Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII), which comes under the Rubber Board. The world’s first GM rubber plant has been planted at the Rubber Board’s Sarutari research farm on the outskirts of Guwahati in Assam.
Dhanania has taken charge as the chairman of the board on Thursday. He was the chairman of the board during 2019 January to 2020 March. A mechanical engineer by profession, he had doctorate in rubber technology. He also served as the regional chairman of All India Rubber Industries Association.
