Kochi 27 July (Commoditiescontrol) Chilli production in India is likely to increase in 2020-21 financial year. As per the advance estimate on production, released by the Spices Board, total production will be 19,88, 304 tones in FY 21.
The reason behind the projected increase in production is mainly due to increase in acerage of cultivation of chilli. The area under chilli cultivation will be 73,22.13 hactares as against 62,34,46 ha in the previous financial year. During 2019 -20 total production was 18,41,800 tones.
Andhrapradesh is the largest producing state in the country with a contribution of 26 per cent of the total area, followed by Maharashtra , Karnataka, Odisha and Madhyapradesh.
There is moderate swing in the production of chilli during the last five year period commencing from 2016-17. Top production reported in 2016-17, as per the data and the production was to the tune of 241,11,50 tones. In India domestic consumption of chilli is rather high, hence export is comparatively low.
During 2020-21 India exported 601,500 tones of chilli valued at Rs 8429.75 crore as against 496,000 tones valued at Rs 6710.39 crore, registering a growth of 21 per cent in volume and 26 per cent in value.
Mexico is world’s largest producer by value followed by China. While top producing countries are Mexico, Turkey and Indonesia. India is the world’s largest market for chilli as Indians use the spice in almost all daily food items. Hence, India is the largest consuming country of chilli in the world.
