India's total acreage of Rabi crops up 1.10% y/y at 679.34 lakh hectare so far

NEW DELHI, Jan 21 (Commoditiescontrol) - Total area sown with the ongoing Rabi season crops rose 1.10 percent to 679.34 lakh hectare so far, driven by higher acreage in case of oilseeds.

Sowing of Rabi season crops starts from October. In the year-ago period, the acreage stood at 671.98 lakh hectare.

Wheat is the main winter or rabi crop. Pulses, such as gram, urad, moong as well as oilseeds like rapeseed & mustard, groundnut and sunflower, are other rabi crops grown in this season.

According to the sowing data released by the ministry, oilseeds were sown in 101.16 lakh hectare so far (till Jan 21) this rabi season, 22.09 percent higher than 82.86 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.

Pulses were sown in 164.35 lakh hectare so far in the 2021-22 rabi season, as against 162.88 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.

However, area under wheat, coarse cereals and paddy so far was reported lower than the year-ago period, the data showed.

Wheat has been sown in 340.82 lakh hectare so far in the rabi season of 2021-22 as against 345.14 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.

Paddy was planted in 23.61 lakh hectare so far this rabi season as against 30.21 lakh hectare in the year ago period, while that of coarse cereals in 49.40 lakh hectare as against 50.90 lakh hectare in the said period.
