Mumbai, 17 May (Commoditiescontrol): India has recently decided to enter into a long-term contract with Russia and Kazakhstan for imports of the key pulses variety. The country is facing acute shortage of supplies ever since Russia invaded Ukraine.

In the past, India , decided to enter into a long term contract with pulses supplying countries, in an effort to chekc price rise. India has already signed a similar agreement with leading suppliers, such as Mozambique, Myanmar and Malawi for import of other varieties of pulses, namely tur and arhar.

As per the data analysed by Commoditiescontrol.com, India has imported 28.64 lakh metric tonnes (2.86 million metric tonnes) in 2021. This year so far, imports have totalled 10.33 lakh mt (1.03 mln mt) with arrival gaining pace after the relaxation in COVID-19 induced lockdowns.

As far as receiving ports are concerned, Madras Sea Port continues to top the chart with arrival of 12.25 lakh mt cargo during the 15-month period. JNPT Port near Mumbai received 11.87 lakh mt, followed by Calcutta (5.64 lakh mt), Bombay Port (3.02 lakh mt) and Mundra SEZ port (1.62 lakh mt) in that order.

India signed a MoU with Mozambique for import of 2 lakh tonne of tur or arhar annually for five years, when the retail prices of tur skyrocketed to Rs 200 a kg in 2016. This MoU was extended for another five years in September 2021.

In 2021, India entered into MoUs with Malawi and Myanmar for the import of 50,000 tonne and 1,00,000 tonne of tur per annum, respectively, till 2025.

India met 10-12 percent of its domestic consumption through imports. In anticipation of domestic shortfall in the output in May 2021, India had put import of tur, urad and moong varieties of pulses under ‘open’ from ‘restricted’ category earlier till March 2023.
