NEW DELHI, Aug 9 (Commoditiescontrol) - The first two-and-a-half months of the monsoon season are about to pass, but 17 per cent of the country has received much less than normal rainfall, which has had an impact on paddy planting. In the current kharif, paddy has been sown in only 274.29 lakh hectare, lagging 12.68 percent. This is likely to have an impact on the production of rice in the current Kharif.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), from June 1 to August 9, the country has received 7 per cent more rainfall than normal, but during this period eastern and western Uttar Pradesh have received 44 and 37 per cent less rainfall than normal, respectively. Similarly, Bihar has received 35 percent less rainfall, Jharkhand 48 percent less and West Bengal 46 percent less rainfall during this period.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, till August 5, paddy has been planted in only 274.29 lakh hectares in states across the country, which is 12.68 percent less than 314.13 lakh hectares in the same period last year.
In the current kharif paddy transplantation in Bihar has come down to 23.29 lakh hectares, which is less than 28.14 lakh hectares in the same period last year. Similarly, in Jharkhand, paddy has been sown in only 3.09 lakh hectares in the current kharif, whereas in the last kharif till this time it was planted in 12.43 lakh hectares.
In Uttar Pradesh, so far paddy has been planted in only 53.17 lakh hectares in the current Kharif, which is less than 56.99 lakh hectares in the same period last year. In West Bengal, paddy has been planted in only 17.47 lakh hectares in the current kharif till August 5, which is less than 29.75 lakh hectares in the same period last year.
In Andhra Pradesh, paddy has been planted in 6.66 lakh hectares in the current Kharif, in Assam in 14.40 lakh hectares and in Chhattisgarh in 27.54 lakh hectares. In the corresponding period of last kharif, it was in 6.53 lakh hectare, 13.76 lakh hectare and 31.64 lakh hectare in these states respectively.
In Haryana, paddy has been sown in 12.40 lakh hectares in the current Kharif and 30.85 lakh hectares in Punjab as compared to 12.82 lakh hectares and 30.33 lakh hectares respectively in these states during the same period of last kharif season.
In Madhya Pradesh, paddy has been sown in 22.65 lakh hectares in the current kharif, 12.70 lakh hectares in Maharashtra and 16.41 lakh hectares in Odisha and 7.32 lakh hectares in Telangana, as compared to 26.37 lakh hectares, in 10.21 lakh hectares, in 19.97 lakh hectares and in 10.21 lakh hectares in these states in the same period of last kharif respectively.
