MUMBAI, 19 Nov (Commoditiescontrol): India's yellow pea imports have witnessed a remarkable surge in the past ten months, driven by favorable government policies such as duty-free import allowances. Between December 2023 and September 2024, India imported a total of 2.18 million metric tons of yellow peas, with Canada emerging as the dominant supplier. India allowed duty free imports of yellow peas to tame rise in prices of Chana.
India's yellow pea imports peaked in March 2024, recording a massive 670,836 MT—nearly double the volume imported in February. April followed with significant arrivals of 402,548 MT. However, imports gradually tapered off in the subsequent months, with September seeing a low of 40,154 MT. This trend reflects the initial surge driven by favorable import policies and a gradual stabilization of market demand.
Canada has solidified its position as India's top supplier, contributing 918,862 MT, accounting for nearly 42% of the total imports. Russia ranked second with 808,820 MT, driven by competitive pricing and growing export capacities. Turkey stood third with 229,892 MT, followed by Ukraine (62,631 MT) and Latvia (47,640 MT). Other smaller contributors, including the UAE and Spain, collectively added to the diversified supply chain.
Looking ahead, the dependency on imports may gradually decrease as the Kharif harvest reaches markets, potentially exerting downward pressure on prices. However, the depreciating rupee against the dollar could offset some of these effects, making imports slightly more expensive in the coming months.
