Soy Bean Oil saw modest gains in open interest as on week ended 2 February 2016. Overall market was net short. Additions to both short and long positions were seen with almost the same intensity with short positions being marginally ahead.

Hedgers were net short in the market. Though long and short positions were added by them, addition of shorts far outnumbered long positions.

Swap Dealers were net long in the market. They continued to add to long positions and reduced short positions. Reduction of positions in calendar spreads was also seen.

Managed money was also net long in the market. However, both long and short positions were added in the old crop futures. New crop futures saw addition to long positions and reduction of short positions. Reduction in calendar spread positions was witnessed.

Other reportable positions were also net long in the market. However, pace of adding short positions was greater in the old crop. New crop saw larger addition to long positions. Reduction in calendar spread was witnessed.

Non-reportable positions were no different and were net long in the market. Addition of long positions was greater than addition of short positions. However in the new crop small reduction was seen in long positions.

4 or less large traders however had a larger concentration in short positions.

Outlook

Barring the 4 large traders who have larger short positions mostly belonging to the hedger’s category, the rest of the market is predominantly long. Hence we would expect prices to increase in the coming weeks.
