Area under pulses expands, acreage of oilseeds falls behind

New Delhi, 7 August ( Commoditiescontrol) With improvement in rainfall across the country, the area under pulses has increased 1.86 percent from last year but the acreage of oilseeds is still down by 3.46 percent as per the latest updates of the sowing coverage.

Area under all kharif crops in the current sowing season has been recorded at 933.88 lakh hectares, down 2.36 percent from the corresponding figure of 956. 47 lakh hectares last year, showed the data released by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers welfare on Friday.

As per the latest data, the acreage of the paddy is at 310.18 lakh hectares, against 318.88 lakh hectare in the corresponding time last year. Area under pulses is 119.54 lakh hectares against 117.36 lakh hectares.

The acreage of urad and moong is slightly down but area under arhar, kulthi and other pulses have exceeded the corresponding acreage last year. The sowing of arhar is complete in the area of 44.41 lakh hectares against 42.12 lakh hectares last year. The acreage of urad is 33.90 against 34.40 last year and moong has been sown in 30.24 lakh hectares against 31.04 lakh hectares last year. Area under Kulthi is 26,000 ha while other pulses have been sown in 10.73 lakh hectares.

Area under oilseeds is 173.50 lakh ha against 179.71 lakh hectares. The acreage of groundnut is 44.40 lakh hectares, down 2.68 lakh hectares from last year. Similarly, area under soybean is 115.14 lakh hectares, down 2.93 lakh hectares from last year.

The acreage of cotton is at 116.17 lakh hectares, down 7.46 lakh hectares from the last year.

Rice: About 310.17 lakh ha area coverage has been reported compared to normal of corresponding week (305.62 lakh ha). Thus 4.55 lakh ha more area has been covered compared to normal of corresponding week. Higher area is reported from the States of Madhya Pradesh (7.20 lakh ha), Telangana (5.08 lakh ha), Jharkhand (1.46 lakh ha), Maharashtra (1.45 lakh ha), West Bengal (1.01 lakh ha), Tamil Nadu (0.98 lakh ha), Punjab (0.37 lakh ha), Gujarat (0.29 lakh ha), Haryana (0.21 lakh ha), Bihar (0.12 lakh ha), Arunachal Pradesh (0.04 lakh ha) and Uttarakhand (0.01 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of Assam (4.03 lakh ha), Odisha (3.49 lakh ha), Chhattisgarh (1.80 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (0.96 lakh ha), Nagaland (0.94 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.76 lakh ha), Karnataka (0.72 lakh ha), Rajasthan (0.29 lakh ha), Manipur (0.23 lakh ha), Himachal Pradesh (0.18 lakh ha), Tripura (0.09 lakh ha), Kerala (0.07 lakh ha), Goa (0.06 lakh ha), Meghalaya (0.03 lakh ha), Sikkim (0.01 lakh ha) and Jammu & Kashmir (0.01 lakh ha).
Pulses: About 119.54 lakh ha area coverage has been reported compared to normal of corresponding week (121.69 lakh ha). Thus 2.15 lakh ha less area has been covered compared to normal of corresponding week. Higher area is reported from the States of Karnataka (3.16 lakh ha), Haryana (0.57 lakh ha), Maharashtra (0.29 lakh ha), Jharkhand (0.22 lakh ha), Bihar (0.09 lakh ha), Nagaland (0.08 lakh ha), Uttarakhand (0.08 lakh ha), Gujarat (0.03 lakh ha), Meghalaya (0.01 lakh ha) and West Bengal (0.01 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of Rajasthan (2.63 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (1.81 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.77 lakh ha), Odisha (0.47 lakh ha), Telangana (0.26 lakh ha), Chhattisgarh (0.23 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (0.19 lakh ha), Himachal Pradesh (0.09 lakh ha), Tamil Nadu (0.07 lakh ha), Punjab (0.06 lakh ha), Arunachal Pradesh (0.04 lakh ha), Tripura (0.03 lakh ha), Sikkim (0.02 lakh ha) and Manipur (0.01 lakh ha).
Coarse cereals: About 153.05 lakh ha area coverage has been reported compared to normal of corresponding week (158.92 lakh ha). Thus 5.87 lakh ha less area has been covered compared to normal of corresponding week. Higher area is reported from the States of Karnataka (2.39 lakh ha), Himachal Pradesh (1.46 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (0.59 lakh ha), Assam (0.19 lakh ha), Jammu & Kashmir (0.06 lakh ha) and Punjab (0.03 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of Maharashtra (3.06 lakh ha), Rajasthan (2.19 lakh ha), Haryana (1.52 lakh ha), Telangana (1.46 lakh ha), Gujarat (0.83 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (0.35 lakh ha), Tamil Nadu (0.28 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.26 lakh ha), Bihar (0.26 lakh ha), Chhattisgarh (0.17 lakh ha), West Bengal (0.05 lakh ha), Jharkhand (0.04 lakh ha), Uttarakhand (0.03 lakh ha), Odisha (0.03 lakh ha) and Arunachal Pradesh (0.02 lakh ha).
Oilseeds: About 173.50 lakh ha area coverage has been reported compared to normal of corresponding week (164.88 lakh ha). Thus 8.62 lakh ha more area has been covered compared to normal of corresponding week. Higher area is reported from the States of Maharashtra (6.00 lakh ha), Gujarat (3.33 lakh ha), Karnataka (1.15 lakh ha), Rajasthan (1.05 lakh ha), Tamil Nadu (0.34 lakh ha), Nagaland (0.14 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (0.12 lakh ha), Haryana (0.08 lakh ha), Bihar (0.08 lakh ha), Tripura (0.04 lakh ha), Manipur (0.03 lakh ha), Uttarakhand (0.03 lakh ha), West Bengal (0.02 lakh ha), Meghalaya (0.02 lakh ha) and Mizoram (0.01 lakh ha). Higher area is reported from the States of Maharashtra (3.01 lakh ha), Uttar Pradesh (0.94 lakh ha), Karnataka (0.61 lakh ha), Gujarat (0.49 lakh ha), Haryana (0.14 lakh ha), Uttarakhand (0.06 lakh ha), Punjab (0.06 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (0.05 lakh ha), Bihar (0.05 lakh ha), Assam (0.04 lakh ha) and Odisha (0.03 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of Tamil Nadu (0.86 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.46 lakh ha), Chhattisgarh (0.20 lakh ha), Telangana (0.13 lakh ha) and West Bengal (0.02 lakh ha).
Jute & Mesta: About 6.99 lakh ha area coverage has been reported compared to normal of corresponding week (7.06 lakh ha). Thus 0.07 lakh ha less area has been covered compared to normal of corresponding week. Higher area is reported from the States of Assam (0.05 lakh ha), Tripura (0.04 lakh ha) and Meghalaya (0.02 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of West Bengal (0.10 lakh ha), Bihar (0.03 lakh ha), Andhra Pradesh (0.02 lakh ha) and Nagaland (0.02 lakh ha).
Cotton: About 116.17 lakh ha area coverage has been reported compared to normal of corresponding week (114.22 lakh ha). Thus 1.95 lakh ha more area has been covered compared to normal of corresponding week. Higher area is reported from the States of Telangana (4.98 lakh ha), Karnataka (0.74 lakh ha), Rajasthan (0.59 lakh ha), Haryana (0.42 lakh ha), Odisha (0.36 lakh ha), Madhya Pradesh (0.11 lakh ha) and Tamil Nadu (0.01 lakh ha). Less area is reported from the States of Gujarat (2.39 lakh ha), Maharashtra (1.81 lakh ha), Punjab (0.62 lakh ha) and Andhra Pradesh (0.60 lakh ha).
