Kochi, 2 July (Commoditiescontrol) Cardamom and ginger recorded sharp increase in exports during FY 2020-21 according to Spices Board data. Export of cardamom (small) recorded 251 per cent increase during 2020-21, compared to the previous financial year.
As per the data, 6500 tonnes of cardamom , valued at Rs 1106.75 crore were shipped, as against 1850 tonnes valued at Rs 425.37 crore in 2019 -20. 160 per cent increase recorded in value terms in the export of cardamom. However, average rate of export price dropped to Rs 1702.69 /Kg from Rs 2299.31 in 2019 -20.
Shipment of cardamom (Large) recorded only 1 per cent increase to 1,325 tonnes during the last financial year against 1310 tonnes in the corresponding previous year. In value terms 29 per cent increase recorded at Rs 91.26 crore as against Rs 70.90 crore in 2019-20.
Ginger exports in volume recorded 108 per cent rise during 2020-21 as against the previous fiscal. 125,700 tonnes of the spice, valued at Rs 756.65 crore were exported as against 60,410 tonnes valued at Rs 529.05 crore in FY 2019-20.
The spread of Covid pandemic helped this commendable performance as both the spices help to enhance immunity of human body. Hence, European Union and USA had imported large quantities of the spices from India.
Export of nutmeg and mace also edged up during the year. Total export were 3875 tonnes, valued at Rs 190 crore as against 2900 tonnes valued at Rs 132.80 crore in 2019 -20.
Meanwhile, black pepper recorded a dip in export in 2020-21. Around 16,300 tonnes of pepper valued at Rs 544.45 crore were shipped as against 17,000 tonnes, valued at Rs 573.70 crore in the previous financial year, Spices Board data says. In the case of volume 4 per cent and in case of value 5 per cent drop were recorded in the shipment of black pepper.
