Mumbai, 09 May 2024 (Commoditiescontrol): Masur or Red Lentil desi and imported masur prices extended gains on Thursday, helped by limited arrivals and steady buying activity. Millers were involved in need-base buying activity to meet consumer demand while restricted arrivals are witnessed.

There's a slight increase of Rs 25 in the prices of masur. In commercial deals, the price of lentils stood at Rs 6,025 per quintal. For the last three days, the prices of lentils have been increasing by Rs 25 every day. Thus, the price of lentils has increased by Rs 75 per quintal in 3 days. The price of export quality masoor dal remained stable at Rs 8,200 per quintal.

The arrival of lentils at Bina Mandi jumped by 138 quintals to 176 quintals. However, it was offered Rs 144 lower at Rs 4,657 per quintal. At the same time, there was an increase of Rs 90 at its upper level to Rs 5,930 per quintal.

In Mumbai, Canadian-origin red lentil prices (CIF) maintained their previous session levels at $715-720 per metric ton (MT). Prices at the Kolkata port stood at $725-730 per MT for immediate delivery.

There is ample supply of masur held by traders, farmers and the government. However, the anticipation of government procurement at higher MSP levels has led to withholding of stock by farmers and leading to decline in domestic arrivals, creating a short-term supply shortfall. Prices are unlikely to remain elevated unless the government begins large-scale masur procurement at MSP.
