Mumbai, 09 Apr 2024 (Commoditiescontrol):Prices for Desi Masur (lentils) remained largely unchanged in bilty (wholesale) trade across most Indian markets on Wednesday. This stability comes amidst reduced trading activity as several markets have either closed or slowed down due to the start of Navratri and the Hindu New Year.
However, slight price declines were observed in the Bareilly and Behraich mandis (markets). Similarly, mandi trade in Lalitpur and Jabalpur also saw a marginal decrease in prices.
Imported masur of Australian and Canadian origin remained steady in the Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata markets.
Analysts project limited potential for price increases in the global masur market. This is due to anticipated acreage expansion for the upcoming Canadian crop and continued imports. Robust domestic supply in India further reduces the likelihood of significant price hikes for imported masur.
Despite this, the Indian government's Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 6425/quintal offers a potential price floor, as it is higher than current market rates. This could help prevent major short-term price drops. Additionally, strong prices for Tur (pigeon pea) could lead to masur gaining market share at Tur's expense, providing additional support for masur prices.
