MUMBAI, 30 May (Commoditiescontrol): China imported 343,986 metric tons (MT) of cotton in April, marking a 13.77% decrease from the previous month, according to recent customs data. Despite this monthly dip, imports surged 309.28% year-on-year, signalling strong demand in the Chinese market.

Cumulative cotton imports for the first four months of 2024 reached 1,383,909 MT, a substantial 262.28% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This highlights the growing need for cotton in various sectors, from textiles to manufacturing.

Brazil and the United States continue to be China's primary cotton suppliers. In April, Brazil led with 164,735 MT, accounting for 48% of total imports. Although down slightly from March, this represents a remarkable 2,097% increase year-on-year. The United States supplied 127,682 MT, comprising 37% of imports, with a significant 101.65% year-on-year increase.

From January to April, Brazil maintained its position as the top supplier, providing 660,673 MT, a 448.52% surge compared to the previous year. The United States followed closely with 474,088 MT, showing a 137.67% year-on-year increase. Together, these two nations accounted for 82% of China's total cotton imports.
