MUMBAI, 4 Jul (Commoditiescontrol): Maharashtra Agriculture Minister Abdul Sattar assured the state assembly that the government is committed to ensuring fair prices for cotton farmers. He was responding to a question raised by MLA Harish Pimpale regarding the disparity between the production cost and market price of cotton. The minister stated that the government has initiated various measures to support cotton farmers, including the establishment of a committee to ensure accurate pricing and procurement.
In the previous season, the government had fixed the minimum support price (MSP) for medium-staple cotton at Rs 6,620 per quintal and long-staple cotton at Rs 7,020 per quintal. For the 2024-25 season, the MSP for medium-staple cotton has been increased to Rs 7,125 per quintal, and long-staple cotton to Rs 7,521 per quintal.
The minister also announced that the government would provide financial assistance to soybean farmers who have been affected by low prices. Additionally, a compensation of Rs 5,000 per hectare, up to a maximum of two hectares, would be provided to cotton farmers who have suffered losses due to natural calamities.
The government has also decided to establish a committee to ensure that cotton farmers receive fair prices for their produce. The committee will consist of agricultural officers, talathis, and gram sevak, who will work together to ensure that farmers receive the correct price for their cotton.
The minister also mentioned that the government is exploring ways to increase the MSP for cotton, as per the recommendations of the Swaminathan Committee. He also assured that the government would take strict action against private traders who have cheated cotton farmers in Buldhana district.
