MUMBAI, 21 Jun (Commoditiescontrol): Farmers in six central and southern Ukrainian regions have kicked off the 2024 grain harvest, according to the agriculture ministry on Friday. The early start, approximately two weeks ahead of schedule, is attributed to unusually hot weather conditions.

As of now, farmers have threshed a total of 48,300 metric tons of grain. This includes 39,900 tons of barley, with an average yield of 2.98 tons per hectare, and 7,300 tons of peas, yielding 2.2 tons per hectare. Additionally, 1,100 tons of wheat have been harvested, also with a yield of 2.2 tons per hectare.

Earlier this month, the agriculture ministry revised its forecast for the 2024 grain harvest, increasing it to 56 million tons from the previous estimate of 52.4 million tons. When combined with oilseeds, the total crop yield could reach 77 million tons.

The anticipated harvest includes 21 million tons of wheat, 28.5 million tons of corn, and 5 million tons of barley. This projection follows the 2023 harvest, where Ukraine collected approximately 81 million tons of grain and oilseeds.

The early start and optimistic forecasts highlight the resilience and adaptability of Ukrainian agriculture in response to changing weather patterns.
