MUMBAI, 24 July (Commoditiescontrol): The latest update from the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) provides an in-depth look at the progress of Kharif oilseed sowing as of July 11, 2024, coupled with detailed rainfall statistics. This comprehensive report highlights the agricultural trends and climatic conditions that are shaping the current season, offering a glimpse into the potential outcomes for the country's farming sector.

As per SEA report, a positive trend is emerging from the on-going Kharif Oilseed sowing progress. As of July 11, 2024, Kharif oilseed sowing has shown a notable increase, with the total sown area reaching 140.425 lakh hectares. This marks a significant rise from the 115.080 lakh hectares recorded during the same period in 2023, reflecting a positive change of 25.345 lakh hectares. This increase in sown area is crucial for meeting the growing demand for oilseeds and ensuring a stable supply chain.

Here's a breakdown of the sown area for various oilseeds reveals interesting trends:

Are under Groundnut sowing stands at 28.202 lakh hectares, showing a slight decrease of 0.066 lakh hectares compared to last year. Despite the marginal decline, groundnut remains a staple crop in the oilseed segment. Soybean is sown on 108.100 lakh hectares. Soybean cultivation has surged by 25.664 lakh hectares. This significant increase underscores soybean's importance in the agricultural economy. The sown area for sunflower has risen to 0.506 lakh hectares, up by 0.170 lakh hectares, indicating a growing interest in this versatile crop. Sesamum cultivation decreased by 0.374 lakh hectares to 3.211 lakh hectares. While this decline may raise concerns, sesamum remains a vital crop for oil production.

Niger sowing has increased to 0.200 lakh hectares, up by 0.183 lakh hectares while the area under Castor has decreased to 0.156 lakh hectares, down by 0.237 lakh hectares, which might impact the castor oil market. Other oilseeds has witnessed a slight increase of 0.006 lakh hectares brings the sown area to 0.050 lakh hectares.

Monsoon holds a key for oilseed cultivation. The SEA report provides valuable insights into the weekly and seasonal rainfall distribution, which is crucial for agricultural planning and crop health. Weekly rainfall data reveals regional variations, with East & North-East India recording 92.2 mm of rainfall, 7% below normal, potentially impacting crop water availability. In contrast, North-West India received 66.6 mm of rainfall, 66% above normal, benefiting crop growth. Central India experienced 66.4 mm of rainfall, 1% below normal, indicating stable but slightly deficient conditions, while the South Peninsula recorded 44.4 mm, 2% above normal, supporting the region's agricultural needs. Overall, the country saw an average of 66.3 mm of rainfall, 12% above normal, which is favorable for Kharif crops.

Seasonal rainfall from June 1 to July 10, 2024, shows East & North-East India at 451.6 mm, 4% below normal; North-West India at 139.0 mm, 5% above normal; Central India at 250.9 mm, 5% below normal; and the South Peninsula at 244.9 mm, 10% above normal. The country as a whole recorded 247.3 mm, aligning with the normal average.

The current data points to a potentially prosperous Kharif season with increased oilseed cultivation and generally favorable rainfall. The significant rise in soybean sown area and positive rainfall trends are likely to boost agricultural productivity. However, the slight deficits in some regions underscore the need for continued monitoring and adaptive strategies to mitigate any potential challenges.
