MUMBAI(Commoditiescontrol) - The small cardamom last week witnessed a sharp rise in prices following scarcity of the commodity in the markets.

The individual auction average has crossed Rs 3,400 a kg on last Saturday while it was at above Rs 3,370 a kg today.

Availability of 8mm bold capsules is very tight and hence it is being traded at Rs 4,200 a kg in Bodinayakannur, Mr Ranganathan, a major dealer said.

According to him arrivals at the auctions are "very poor" and the next crop is expected to hit the markets only in September. It is going to be a delayed and as well as small crop, he added.

In some small pockets the harvesting is taking place and 90 percent of the estates picking might commence next month, says Mr P C Punnoose, General Manager, CPMC, Thekkady. He said the cardamom growing regions are experiencing high temperature this year and that in turn has negatively affected the flowering and fruit setting in plants. Temperature in this region should remain below 30 degree centigrade, he said.

At the auction conducted on Monday(today) by the Kerala Cardamom Processing and Marketing Company Limited, Thekkady total arrivals were at 13.6 tonnes and the entire quantity was traded. The maximum prices stood at Rs 3,947 a kg. The auction average was at Rs 3,372.75 a kg.

No export buying was taking place following the sharp increase in the prices, market sources said.

The prices of graded varieties shot up on tight availability in Bodinayakannur and that were today at (in ₹/Kg) : 8mm good green colour bold 4,200: 7 - 8 mm 3,800 : 6-7 mm 3,400. Good bulk was being sold at Rs3,500 a kg.
