Edible Oil Discharge At Indian Port Slows Due To Lockdown: SEA

MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol)- Discharge of imported edible oil has been delayed at Kandla port in Gujarat as a government agency is struggling to provide necessary certificates due to the coronavirus lockdown, the Solvent Extractors Association of India said on Friday.

The industry body has also suggested a few options to the government to enable quick release of edible oil.

"In Mumbai or other ports where FSSAI offices are available and single window clearance is available, the EDI system grants waivers for such cargoes, if the same single window clearance can be adopted or permitted at Kandla, Mundra and Hazira ports then edible oil can be cleared easily. Secondly almost all of edible oil import is crude/non refined in nature (crude palm oil, crude degumed soybean oil, other crude edible oils) the same can only be used after proper refining is done at edible oil refinery. In view of this testing of crude cargo at import stage could be waved for speedy clearance," Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA) Executive Director B V Mehta said in a letter to the ministry of commerce and industry.

India fulfils around two-third of its edible oil requirement through imports.
