New Delhi, March 12 (Commodities Control): Increased demand from dal mills drove up chana prices in Delhi's Tuesday morning session, though trading volumes remained limited. Lower daily chana arrivals contributed to the price rise. Market expectations are for sustained demand through the current chana dal and besan consumption season.
Rajasthan chana prices on Lawrence Road increased by Rs 50 to Rs 6,050-6,075 per quintal. Madhya Pradesh chana saw a larger Rs 75 gain, trading at Rs 6,000-6,025 per quintal. Prices for new Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh chana also increased by Rs 50, reaching Rs 5,950-5,975 and Rs 5,900-5,925 per quintal, respectively.
A decline in arrivals further supported price gains, with only two motors of chana recorded compared to 8 motors on the previous trading day.
Analysts predict post-Holi pressure on mandis in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh as the new chana crop arrives. However, the government's MSP for chana at Rs 5,440 per quintal, coupled with current market prices exceeding MSP, suggests major price increases are unlikely.
Traders note that the opening stock of old chana in producing states is low. New chana supplies are entering markets in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, but a depleted pipeline results in localized consumption.
