Mumbai, 26 Apr 2024 (Commoditiescontrol):Domestic masur (red lentil) prices saw a slight increase compared to chana (chickpea) and matar (pea) prices, despite decreased demand. In major markets, arrivals were significantly lower this week. Industry sources suggest the decline in arrivals is a combined result of prevailing low prices and farmers intending to sell their produce to the government at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Additionally, a few markets were closed due to ongoing parliamentary elections.
Meanwhile, Canadian-origin red lentil prices (CIF) in Mumbai dropped by $10, now ranging between $720-725 per MT. Kolkata port prices are quoted slightly higher between $730 and $735 per MT.
The limited supply is anticipated to maintain stable domestic masur prices. However, experts suggest a substantial surge is unlikely unless the government commences MSP purchases. Increased imports and positive monsoon predictions, which could boost tur (pigeon pea) acreage, are expected to curb aggressive price increases.
