Mumbai, 4 May (Commoditiescontrol):In response to anticipated shortfalls in domestic chickpea (desi chana) production, the Indian government has exempted legume imports from customs duties until March 2025. The move aims to stabilize prices and ensure adequate supplies for the country's consumers.

Simultaneously, the government imposed a 40% export duty on onions. This measure is intended to curb rising onion prices within the domestic market. Onions are a staple food in India, and their price fluctuations can have significant economic and social impacts.

The government also extended duty exemption on imports of yellow peas for which bill of entry was issued on or before October 31, 2024.
