Mumbai, 08 Apr 2024 (Commoditiescontrol):Prices for Kabuli Chana ( Kabuli chickpeas) strengthened in major mandis across Madhya Pradesh, with PKV-2 and Mexican varieties in Delhi also seeing increases. Robust demand and decline in arrivals fueled a Rs 200 per quintal boost, though the Indore Mandi's closure temporarily eased immediate supply pressure.
Arrivals in Madhya Pradesh's Kabuli growing regions have decreased by 12,000 bags, now estimated at 30,000 to 32,000 bags. This supply tightness contributes to the upward price movement.
However, Canadian Kabuli Chickpeas (FOB) prices, quoted at $1,190-$1,200 per MT for 7 mm and $1,340-$1,350 per MT for 10 mm, act as a ceiling for substantial price gains. Projections of increased Canadian acreage are contributing to pressure on international prices.
The closure of mandis for the Hindu new year, Navratri, and Eid will likely support prices in the near term. Reduced arrivals due to the holidays should create short-term supply constraints. However, ample Canadian supplies n global market at price of approximately $1350/MT FOB Canada ports (Rs 11,340/quintal) for large-sized Kabuli chickpeas will likely limit significant upside potential in the Indian market.
