Mumbai, 11 Mar (Commoditiescontrol): The Rajasthan government is currently undertaking a girdawari (crop loss assessment) across 21 districts affected by severe rain, hailstorms, and thunderstorms earlier this month. The storms have caused concern over potential damage to the state's rabi crops, including wheat, cumin, and isabgol.
An agriculture department official stated, "The exact figures of damage are expected to be available in about a week after we get survey reports from these areas."
While the full extent of the losses remains uncertain, farmers in western Rajasthan have already reported damage to cumin and isabgol crops, with cumin potentially facing a 25% reduction in yield due to the adverse weather.
As per trade sources, wheat, barley, and gram harvest is expected to start in the next 10–15 days, and no significant loss is reported in these commodities. However, rainfall during harvesting can be detrimental to crop quality.
Wheat, barley, gram, and mustard are staples of Rajasthan's rabi cropping season, and the agriculture sector is crucial to the state, contributing 25% to its gross domestic product. Government data indicates the anticipated production of 1.04 million tonnes of wheat, 2.34 million tonnes of gram, and 6.23 million tonnes of mustard and rapeseed this rabi season.
