MUMBAI, April 19 (Commoditiescontrol):Chinese scientists have developed a new variety of rapeseed that could increase domestic vegetable oil production and reduce China's reliance on imported seeds. The new breed has a shorter growth cycle, increased cold tolerance, and earlier fertility, making it suitable for utilising vacant winter farmland.
The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) is currently testing the new rapeseed variety in Jiangxi province. The application of this breed could increase China's self-sufficiency in vegetable oil by approximately 12 percentage points through an estimated increase of 11.25 million tonnes of rapeseed annually.
Currently, China's self-sufficiency in edible oil is around 30%, with most of it still relying on imports, according to CAAS. This development could ease pressure on China's seed industry and reduce the nation's dependence on overseas vegetable oils.
