MUMBAI, April 20 (Commoditiescontrol):Sunflower seed production in the European Union is expected to hit a new record high this year, according to the latest estimates from the EU Commission. The total output is projected to be around 10.9 million tonnes, which is just under 18% higher than the previous year.
The increase in production is primarily due to higher yields in several EU member states, including Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, and Slovakia. Romania is expected to be the largest EU producer, with an estimated harvest of 3.3 million tonnes, up by almost 42% compared to the previous year.
Interestingly, the increase in sunflower seed production is set to more than offset the anticipated declines in France and Germany. France is expected to harvest only 1.7 million tonnes of sunflower seed, down by around 105,000 tonnes compared to the previous year, mainly due to a smaller sunflower area. Meanwhile, the EU Commission projects a sharp decline in sunflower seed production in Germany, which is expected to be more than half of the previous year's level.
Despite a projected 7% reduction in the EU sunflower area to 4.8 million hectares, the expected record harvest indicates a significant yield increase. These findings show the potential of the EU's sunflower sector to adapt to changing market conditions and continue to increase productivity.
