New Delhi (Commodities Control) –The southwest monsoon’s progress is reportedly to remain slow as a stream of mid-latitude westerly winds is approaching Northwest India that may obstruct the progress of monsoon in next few days. However, India received above 31 percent above normal rains during the first 15 days of this month that is good for farming.

As per the data available with India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cumulative rainfall received in the country during June 1-15 was 83.5 mm against normal during the period at 63.9 mm. Hence, India received 31 percent more rains during this period.

The central India received 66 percent above normal rains during earl 15 days of June as rainfall during this period was at 88.2 mm against normal rains at 53.3 mm. However, Gujarat, Saurasthra and Kutch received deficient rains.

Northwest India received 38.4 mm rains against normal at 24.9 mm which shows an increase of 54 percent in rainfall so far.

In south peninsular region 96.4 mm rainfall has been received against 73.5 mm that shows an increase of rainfall by 31 percent.

East and north east India received 144.8 mm of rains against normal during the period at 149.6 mm. Hecne this region received 3percent less than normal rains during early 15 days of June as monsoon season normally begins in India with its onset on June 1 over Kerala, the south Indian state.

The southwest monsoon arrived 2 days delayed from its normal onset over Kerala on June 3 this year but it covered a large part of the country within two weeks of its progress. However, its pace of progress has slowed down.

The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) continues to pass through Diu, Surat, Nandurbar, Bhopal, Nowgong, Hamirpur, Barabanki, Bareilly, Saharanpur, Ambala and Amritsar, said IMD on Wednesday.

Large scale atmospheric conditions are not favourable for further advance of monsoon into Rajasthan, remaining parts of Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. However, there could be slow progress into some more parts of Uttar Pradesh during next five days in association with the existing cyclonic circulation over East Uttar Pradesh in the lower levels.

The Low Pressure Area over east Uttar Pradesh & adjoining Bihar has become less marked. However, the associated cyclonic circulation lies over East Uttar Pradesh & neighbourhood and extends upto 3.1 km above mean sea level, said IMD.

The Western Disturbance is now seen as a trough in mid & upper tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level, said weather department.
