Mumbai, 04 September (Commoditiescontrol):Major urad-growing regions faced continued dry weather for the past week, marking a full month of dry conditions. Despite this challenge, the crop's growth and development are reported to be in a good state. Relief may be on the horizon as weather forecasts predict rain for these areas in the coming week. This much-needed rain is expected to significantly aid pod development.

At present, the urad crop is in its flowering to pod-setting phase, with the early-planted batches already progressing to the pod development stage. If all goes well, harvesting is scheduled to commence from the last week of September. However, experts warn that the prospects could change if there's an extended dry spell that continues till mid-September or if unexpected rains occur during the critical harvest time towards the end of September.

Further data from the Ministry of Agriculture highlights a significant shift in farming patterns. The area dedicated to urad cultivation has reduced by 13.6% this year. This change comes as farmers in key states chose to prioritize other crops. In Rajasthan, the preference went to paddy and soybean, Madhya Pradesh saw an increase in maize and soybean, while Uttar Pradesh farmers leaned towards groundnut. As a result of these shifts, urad acreage is anticipated to be 8–10% lower, especially in major cultivating states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra.

Despite these challenges, the current outlook for the urad crop remains positive. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the final yield and quality of the produce.
