MUMBAI (Commoditiescontrol) – Australia’s 2018-19 chickpeas (chana) production forecast down by 43.02% from previous June estimates and sharply lower by 69.43% from 2017-18 estimates, according to latest report released by the Australia Bureau of Agriculture Resource (Abares).
Australia is likely to produce 3.51 lakh tonnes of chana during 2018-19 from June estimates of 6.16 lakh tonnes and sharply down from 11.48 lakh tonnes in 2017-18.
The fall reflects below average rainfall early in the winter cropping season, lower expected returns from chickpeas relative to cereal crops, poor demand from India and rotational constraints following three consecutive years of significant increases in planted area, said Abares.
In other major pulses crop, lentil output is likely to fall 23.92% at 3.69 lakh tonnes from 4.85 lakh tonnes a year ago.
